Dry Tortugas Camping

Camping at Dry Tortugas National Park is a unique experience, as the park is located about 70 miles west of Key West, Florida, and is only accessible by boat or seaplane. Here’s what you should know if you’re considering a camping trip there:

1. How to Get There

  • Ferry: The Yankee Freedom III ferry operates daily trips to the park. It takes about 2.5 hours to reach the Dry Tortugas.

  • Seaplane: Flights are available from Key West and take about 40 minutes.

  • Private Charter: Conch 'N Around Charters private trips up to 6 people.

2. Camping Details

  • Location: You’ll camp at Garden Key, where Fort Jefferson is located.

  • Campsites: Campsites are on a first come first serve basis.  Some may have grills and picnic tables.

  • Amenities: Campsites are primitive, with no running water or electricity. There are porta potty restrooms available for use during your stay.

  • What to Bring: You’ll need to bring all your own food, water (at least one gallon per person per day), and camping gear. Sunscreen, insect repellent, and a hat are also important, given the sun and bugs.

3. Activities

  • Snorkeling and Diving: The park is known for its clear waters and diverse marine life. Bring your gear or rent it from local operators.

  • Exploring Fort Jefferson: The historic fort is a key attraction, with guided tours available.

  • Bird Watching: The park is a nesting ground for several bird species, especially during the spring and summer.

4. Rules and Regulations

  • Leave No Trace: It's important to follow the Leave No Trace principles to help preserve the natural beauty of the park.

  • Fire Restrictions: Open fires are not allowed. You’ll need to use a camp stove for cooking.

  • Wildlife: Be aware of wildlife and respect their space. This includes keeping food stored properly to avoid attracting animals.

5. Weather

  • Heat and Humidity: Be prepared for high temperatures and humidity. Bring lightweight, moisture-wicking clothing and stay hydrated.

  • Storms: Check the weather forecast before your trip, as storms can be frequent and intense.
